Stories of  Cleopatra have existed for thousands of years & as with all legends it’s not easy to determine fact from fiction.  The Queen of Kings has been written about by poets & playwrights including Shakespeare, George Bernard Shaw, John Dryden & many many more.  Artists have painted their representations of her & many films have been made about her.  When dramatists get hold of a story it is romanticized & often much artistic licence is taken.  Despite the speculation, much of the real Cleopatra remains a mystery to us & that is one of the reasons that she is so enticing & enthralling to this day.

There is plenty of speculation around what Cleopatra looked like.  Although it is known that on her father’s side she came from Greek descent, it is not absolutely certain who her mother was.  Her family the Ptolemy dynasty traditionally married their close relations & her mother may have been Cleopatra V, her father’s wife & sister.  However there are theories that her mother was actually an Egyptian woman & so her features cannot be entirely known.

Greek would have been her first language, but she studied & learned several other languages & was possibly the first of her lineage to actually speak Egyptian.  She also identified with the Egyptian Gods & Goddesses, her personal patron being Isis the ancient Egyptian Goddess of wisdom, motherhood & fertility.  During her reign it was widely believed that she was the reincarnation of Isis & she was popular with the Egyptian people.

On the death of her father, the 18 year old  Cleopatra VII ascended to the throne of Egypt in 51 BC with her brother Ptolemy XIII.  The alliance was not a happy one & the young queen was unwilling to share power with her younger brother who was easily manipulated his court councillors.  She held a brief period of solitary rule but soon had to flee in exile from her enemies.

It is fabled that Cleopatra first met Julius Caesar when she persuaded a Sicilian merchant to smuggle her into what had been Cleopatra’s palace in Alexandria where Caesar had taken up residence.  It had been Caesar’s intention to act as a mediator between the warring siblings & to remain impartial.  However when he met her, Cleopatra so beguiled & charmed him that she became his mistress & he her political ally.

The legend of the pearl banquet. The story goes that Cleopatra held a most lavish feast with every extravagance imaginable.  Fine foods were served on gold platters & expensive wines distributed in jeweled goblets.  The Queen summoned a cup of vinegar & into it she dropped a huge & expensive pearl.  The great pearl dissolved in the liquid & Cleopatra drank the whole thing down in one gulp.  Whether or not the most expensive banquet of all time really happened is debatable, the tale was not circulated until long after her death, but it’s a great story nonetheless.
